Texas is blessed with more species of butterflies than any other state. Nearly 430 differently species! Invite these delicate creatures into your backyard garden with a home designed to keep them safe and dry. Hang a butterfly niche in a shady area so that the slots are at the same level as your flowers, but no higher than five feet from the ground. Planting flowers such as Cosmos, Verbenas, Marigolds, Lantanas, Ageratums and Zinnias; and shrubs such as the Butterfly Bush, Honeysuckle and Lavender will help attract more butterflies. Place the butterfly niche near a water source such as a birdbath or pond. You can place a few flowers and sticks inside the house for caterpillars to attach their chrysalis or place some bark and leaves inside to encourage butterflies to lay their eggs.
